Curriculum Vitae Preparation
Essential notes for a good and concise CV.
- Try to keep your CV over two pages, any more and clients get bored with reading it, three is acceptable if needs be.
- Use an easily legible type face, Arial or Times New Roman are good, we appreciate the need to be individual but italics or script though lovely in a hand written letter can be difficult to read in print. Use the best quality paper you can, if you wish use a classic colour paper, other than white, but by this we mean cream, or duck egg blue or pale green not bright or fluorescents! This will stand out from the crowd with out being garish.
- Tell them who you are and how to reach you! You would be amazed at the number of CV’s we get that have no contact details whatsoever. Also be sensible about the email you put down. Try to have an email address that isn’t in the realms of fluffybunny@.co.uk as this is unprofessional and will not impress.
- You do not have to tell them your age, religion or status.
- Always do a profile on yourself. This is where you sell yourself and your skills and make the client want to know more about you. Change this for each job application if you can, make it pertinent information on a specific role.
- Make your educational details brief but informative. The younger you are the more information about your education is required. The older you are the briefer you may be, however if a qualification is essential to the job role make sure it’s there, if you have it.
- Get to the point! Where did you work, when did you start and when did you leave? What did you do? What were your main achievements whilst there?
- Some people like to list their hobbies and interests. Think about this. If you are applying to be a lifeguard and you love swimming let them know, if you think any interests you may have might put your employer off don’t list them.
- References - you have two choices here. You can type, “References supplied upon request” or alternatively give two work references. These will not be applied for without prior permission.
- The key to remember about a good CV is that it is informative without being boring, enticing the reader through the page and encouraging them to ask you for an interview.
